Cost effective

Sea3 derives its fundamental advantage by creating an opportunity to reduce cost in three sectors of the supply chain; transportation, storage and local drayage.

Transportation

The service is a real money saver for heavier cargo given the surcharges and maximum weight restrictions placed by both major rail lines serving the Southwestern Ontario/Montreal corridor. The Sea3 service can handle containers loaded up to the plated maximum (approximately 28 tons). By being able to put more weight in each container it is possible to dramatically reduce the transportation costs per ton.

Terminal Storage

The terminal storage rules and tariff at the Hamilton Port Authority’s new terminal can help eliminate unwelcome detention charges on import shipments. A combination of increased free time and minimal storage charges mean that the excessive costs being incurred at the rail terminals today can become a thing of the past.

Local Drayage

The Hamilton terminal is closer to many origin and destination points than the rail terminals. Quite simply, the less distance a container needs to be trucked the less it costs. Also, the new purpose built terminal has been designed to minimize truck turnaround times allowing improved driver efficiency.

Green alternative

Marine transport offers numerous environmental benefits compared to shipping by rail or truck including fewer emissions, fewer air pollutants, less noise pollution and less fuel consumption.

Green alternative chart

Marine vessels use as little as 10-20% of the energy required for trucking. In fact, we estimate that it will take less than 3 litres of fuel to transport a tonne of cargo from Hamilton to Montreal (based on McKeil Marine fuel study).

Social Responsibility

Sea3 offers a more socially responsible transportation solution by reducing highway congestion, accidents and spills, as well as reducing the overall environmental footprint from transportation activity.
